A WiFi dash cam makes it more convenient to download video from a dashboard camera by allowing you to do it directly to a Wi-Fi enabled smartphone or tablet.  A WiFi dash cam has integrated Wi-Fi that keeps you from having to pull the SD card to transfer it to a PC for viewing.

WiFi Dash Cam: Wheelwitness Pro Plus HD Wi-Fi Dash Cam Intro ViewAs WiFI dash cam technology has evolved, cameras have become more reliable and more convenient.  The latest Wi-Fi dash cameras support both Apple and Android devices.

Why would you want any dash cam at all?

In many accidents, the only two witnesses are the drivers of the two vehicles.  That means that in most cases, it’s your word against the other driver in court.  A dash cam can automatically and continuously record video and audio that may be important evidence for the police, courts, and insurance companies in an incident that is disputed.

In your search for a Wi-Fi dashboard camera, don’t overlook some important other features of any dash cam:

Video Quality

Of all the features you should look for, a quality video picture is the most important.  Whether you want to replay an incredible event that happened while you were driving or it’s important to see the license plate of a hit and run driver, excellent quality video is essential.

There are 2K cameras now that have even better resolution than Full HD.  You should get at least Full HD 1080p @ 30 frames per second video capability.

Field of View

Nothing seems to happen right in front of your vehicle so being able to see into the lanes next to you is also important.  There are threats from all sides and having a wide-angle camera lens reduces the chance that you will miss getting the incident on video.  There are 150-degree FOV cameras out there, but you should expect to have at least a 140-degree wide angle view.

There are varying opinions on whether Lithium battery power or capacitor power is better for these cameras.  Lithium typically provides more power and longer record times while capacitors do better in heat and vibration.

On most dash cams, the battery is only there to keep the video from corrupting and maintaining continuity of the video when the camera loses power.  Most cameras do not run on battery or capacitor.  So, which you get may not be as big a deal as many make it out to be.

Large Data Storage Support

Few dash cams come with SD card storage.  Even models that come with an SD card usually provide the smallest size that’s compatible to save money.  That means that you will probably have to purchase it separately.

The important part is how large an SD card does the camera support.  A large SD card is important to prevent overwriting some video that might become important later before you have time to download it to permanent storage.

This can happen because most dashboard cameras are operated in loop recording mode which continuously overwrites previous video footage.  It’s a technique that prevents you from running out of storage space, but it could come back to bite you if some overwritten video becomes important.

To prolong the video recording before overwriting begins, you need a larger SD card.  The problem is that you can buy very large SD cards, but most cameras are limited to at most 128 GB of storage and most are much more limited than that.

So, for those cameras you are considering, make sure you check on the maximum SD storage card size accepted.

It’s nice to have the flexibility to mount your WifFi dash cam where you want it.  That being said, the higher you mount the camera, the better view you will have of the road in front of you.  Although dashboard mounting may be convenient for you, windshield mounting via a suction mount will give you the best view.

Suction cup mounts are notorious for falling off because of vibration, heat, or cold.  Some of the problems depend on the camera itself.  If the camera is heavy, it’s more likely to put stress on the mount causing it to dislodge.  A compact and lightweight model is better for suction cup mounting and is likely to stay on your windshield.

Almost all cameras that have GPS capability use it to encode location onto your video recordings.  They do not provide navigation capability.  There are some cameras that also provide GPS navigation, so if that’s what you’re looking for, read carefully to make sure that’s what you’re getting.
