This article is about a safety item that most cars don’t have yet, but everyone agrees is an important addition. In fact, in just a few short years, all new cars will be required to have one of these.
We’re talking about a reverse camera or backup camera. It is truly one of the most unique gifts you could give her. Of all the available gifts for her, this gift can really save her from an unfortunate incident. If she doesn’t have one yet, she needs to get one, and what better way for you to help her than to give her one that you are confident in.
These devices come in a variety of types, styles, sizes, and capabilities which can make it difficult to decide on the right one. Let’s talk briefly about some of the different considerations when buying a reversing camera.
There are two basic types of cameras. There are wireless backup cameras and wired models. Wired backup cameras usually perform better than wireless models because wired cameras are not susceptible to interference. That being said, because you don’t have to run a wire the length of the vehicle during installation to connect the camera to the monitor, wireless reverse cameras are easier to install.
With that in mind, you should choose a wired camera if you are handy with installing electrical items on vehicles or you plan to have the system installed. If you want to do it yourself and you’re not handy, a wireless model will be much less of a headache. Be forewarned though that wireless models do not get high marks for quality and are again subject to interference.
You also need to consider which style of system would work best for her. The two basic styles include models where the reverse monitor is integrated into a clip-on or replacement mirror and ones where the reverse monitor is completely standalone and is affixed to the windshield or dashboard.
The monitors associated with reverse systems come in different sizes and resolutions depending on your budget and need for quality. Smaller device monitors are around 3.5-inches and larger model sizes are generally around 7-inches or less.
Depending on how much you want to spend, backup cameras and their monitors can be equipped with a number of handy features. The cameras themselves can be color or black and white, have infrared night vision capability, have extended range or angles behind the vehicle, and higher resolutions are optional. The monitors, in addition to being different sizes, can also have different resolutions. The higher the resolution purchased, the better the picture. You can also built-in on-screen menus and remote controls for easier adjustment to configurations and options.
Something that’s not often talked about is audio. You have more than one sense and having feedback to as many as possible while backing up gives you a safety advantage. Some models come with a built-in microphone so you can see and hear what’s behind you.
Last, but not least, is mirror image capability. Systems that use regular monitors don’t have it, but you simply must have it. This feature duplicates the normal view you would see in a rearview mirror and without it you will have difficulty reconciling the view you’re seeing during reversing.
It’s true that wireless backup cameras are popular and easier to install. The problem is that it’s hard to find a model from any manufacturer that delivers reasonable performance. We have reviewed wireless rear view systems on this website, but we don’t really recommend them because of interference from Bluetooth and other sources.
Wireless is a little bit of a misnomer given that these systems are not truly wireless. A wireless backup system eliminates the long video cable that needs to run from the camera to the monitor, but the camera still needs to be wired to power and the backup lights. If you’re thinking of doing the installation yourself, it’s not going to be as easy as with a wireless system, but in the end, you will be glad you chose a more reliable, better quality solution. Screen size is really a matter of preference. Models 3.5 inches and above usually provide a reasonable picture that allows you discern objects behind you.
Suffice it to say, that will all the different choices, it can be very difficult to pick a backup camera that meets her needs. With that in mind, we took a look at everything that’s available and picked one that we think has the quality, features, and performance she needs to improve her safety and security.
