A pickup truck tent is the convenient, cost-effective, and fun way to sleep while traveling in your pickup truck. A pickup truck tent is designed to attach to the bed of your truck so you have a dry place to sleep while vacationing or camping.
Whether you have a full-size pickup or a compact pickup, there is a pickup truck tent designed for most vehicles.
Pickup truck tents serve the needs of many outdoor lovers including weekend warriors, adventurers, hunters, fishermen, family campers, and more.
Why would you choose a truck tent over a conventional tent? A pickup truck tent has some advantages over a regular tent. For one thing, you don’t have to find a level clearing to setup your tent. You just park and setup the tent on the back of your truck.
If you’ve already been tent camping you know that a tent on the ground is prone to critters of all kinds attempting to gain access. Everything from bugs and ants to small rodents will want to get to any food inside.
A truck bed tent is elevated off the ground and automatically eliminates most of the problem with ground insects and animals.
In addition, depending on where you setup your ground tent and the weather, you may have a lot of problems with water entering the tent. Nothing sours a camping experience like wet clothing and bedding.
A pickup truck tent keeps your bedding and clothing dry because it’s already up off the ground.
If you haven’t set up a ground tent before, then you need to know that they can be difficult to erect, even if well-designed for quick set up. Most all ground tents need guy lines, tarps, and stakes to keep them dry and to keep them from blowing away in the wind.
None of that is necessary with a truck bed tent that fastens securely to your pickup truck without the need for additional wires or stakes.
What should you look for in a quality pickup truck tent?
Choose a manufacturer with a reputation for providing a tent that will fit your truck. Most manufacturers provide a sizing guide to help you choose the right model. Even so, trying to fit one tent to all of the available truck bed sizes means it may not be a perfect fit.

For the most part, manufacturers provide three sizes of tents to fit compact pickups, mid-size pickups, and full-size pickups.
Full-size pickups also come in long beds, medium beds, and short beds depending on the configuration of the passenger compartment. You will find that there are different bed length options depending on whether you have a Crew Cab, Extended Cab, or Regular Cab pickup truck.
Check the sizing guide for the pickup truck tent model you’re considering and if possible check reviews to make sure customers are having good results installing it on your model of
Most pickup bed tents are designed for the elements and provide moisture protection. How much water resistance they provide varies by the tent manufacturer, make, and model. Make sure that the tent you buy has the kind of waterproofing you’re looking for in a tent, so that there are no surprises when you’re on the road.
When you’re traveling or camping the last thing you need is a lot of trouble setting up a tent on the back of your pickup. The weather may be bad or there may be low light so the installation needs to be as easy and painless as possible.
Some models let you complete the whole tent set up without needing to enter the bed of the truck or use a step stool or ladder. Many connect easily to your truck bed and set up fast. Look for models that have taken into account easy set up in their design.
Some truck bed tents feature a floorless design that allows you to set up and take down the tent without removing your gear from the bed. This can save you a lot of time and hassle when using your truck to get around for the day.
Also, if your truck bed is used for work and isn’t the cleanest, it’s nice to have a floor-less tent that keeps the tent away from the dirt and grime.
If you’re worried that your truck bed isn’t the cleanest, one method of dealing with that is to use a standard tarp to cover the floor while you’re using the tent to protect you and your gear from grease and grime.
How many people are going camping with you? Do you need a tent that can accommodate more than two people. Just by their width, most truck tents are designed for two people. If you have a couple of small children, they will probably fit as well, but more than two adults will be a stretch.
Truck bed tents are available that use extensions off the sides of the bed and even off the tailgate to extend its usefulness to more people.
Some models are even combinations of a truck bed tent and a ground tent which gives them the ability to accommodate a larger number of campers. Ultimately, which type you need will be determined by your requirements.
A rainfly covers the entrance of a tent to protect it from falling rain. Although your tent may be waterproof or at least water resistant, the opening of the tent is exposed every time you enter. If you’re entering in a pouring rain, the inside of your tent could get wet.
Rainflys are optional since you don’t really need one during dry days, but make sure tents you’re considering have it included for when you need it.
Space usage is critical with a pickup bed tent, even if the truck is full-size and has a long bed. Your space is limited by the square footage of your bed.
Some models take advantage of the tailgate to help maximize the amount of space you have in the tent. This is particularly important for compact pickups that have very little bed space.
Protective Straps and Buckles
Since you’re attaching the tent to your truck, you don’t just want a secure fit, you also want to make sure that mounting the tent doesn’t damage your truck. Make sure that any tent you’re considering has protective straps and buckles that will protect the finish of your truck.
There is more to a truck bed that just its size. Most owners decide to get either a slide-in or sprayed-on bed liner to protect it from the damage of everyday hauling. Either one of them can be uncomfortable when using the bed as a tent floor. A spray-in bed line will be rough. If you’re planning to sleep on it, a tarp, mattress, or other protection will make the experience more pleasant.
Most slide-in bed liners are exactly rough, but they present their own problems. Most have deep ridges that keep water away from cargo when loaded. Those ridges are not comfortable even if you get on your knees while loading, let alone when you’re laying on them and trying to sleep. A mattress or some other protection from the grooves is going to be a God-send when camping.
A step ladder is not something that will come with a pickup truck tent. This is just a recommendation from the experiences of many truck campers. The tailgate of a pickup doesn’t seem high when you’re loading it, but when you’re trying to get your butt up onto it when the tent is taking up the tailgate, it’s a different story. A simple, foldable, one or two step stool or ladder can really be helpful when camping.
