Best Backup Camera: Top 5 Wireless Backup Camera Systems

A wireless backup camera is considered to be the best backup camera because it has the advantage of only having to install a monitor/receiver, install a camera/transmitter, and connect everything to power to begin using it.  Wired backup cameras require running a long video cable from the camera to the display monitor.  This being said, you shouldn’t base your choice of the best backup camera on how easy it is to install.

#2 – Yada BT53328M-1 Digital Wireless Backup Camera with 4.3-Inch Dash Monitor

Best Backup Camera: Yada 4.3-Inch Main View

To begin with, the Yada BT53328M-1 Digital Wireless Backup Camera with 4.3-Inch Dash Monitor  has a high-quality IP67-rated weatherproof and night vision capable rear view camera.  It clearly displays live pictures to the rear of your vehicle and comes with an integrated parking assist to make it easier and safer to backup and park.  This is technically a license plate mounted camera it mounts differently than what you might think.  You slide it onto your license plate or possibly onto the bracket.  It’s unclear whether it will fit a license plate that has a bracket.  The advantage of this design is that you get more flexibility to position your camera for the perfect view over traditional license plate mounts that are part of a fixed bracket that mounts using the same holes as your license plate.  See the features that qualify this reverse camera as a candidate for best backup camera.

Features

  • 4.3-inch display, night-vision capable, rear view camera system with IP67 waterproof rating

Is the vision in all the cameras you mention similar to the car’s mirror? How long is the distance I can see in meters? 50 meters? more? I can only use the side mirrors. I can not use the cars center mirror at all, a tall sit ( a 3rd row seat in my transit connect is covering it, and I would like to use the camera as a substitute for the center mirror! Would it work? Can I attached the camera to the back of the seat and would it work through the back window?

    • Mark Ridgeway

Hi Julio, thanks for your question. I have removed your personal information before posting because it’s not a good idea to put personal information in comments. I will answer your questions in turn.

      1) Is the vision in all the cameras you mention similar to the car’s mirror? How long is the distance I can see in meters? 50 meters? more? I can only use the side mirrors. I can not use the cars center mirror at all, a tall sit ( a 3rd row seat in my transit connect is covering it, and I would like to use the camera as a substitute for the center mirror! Would it work? Can I attached the camera to the back of the seat and would it work through the back window?

**Here’s the thing…these cameras are designed to be connected electrically to your backup lights so that the camera only turns on when you back up. It is a feature to prevent driver distraction during driving. In this case, since you are seeking to bypass that characteristic, you would need to connect it to wiring other than the backup lights so that it would stay on all the time.

Unfortunately backup cameras are designed with a wide angle view that doesn’t give you good vision very far back. The screen is also small so that combination limits how far back you can reasonably distinguish cars or other obstacles. I don’t believe it would be an effective replacement for a rearview mirror in any case.

I drove a truck for years and it only had the two side mirrors. Those mirrors were larger and placed farther out than on the Transit Connect. They have aftermarket mirrors that you can add to your vehicle to move the mirrors farther out to help you see. I’m not sure if it would be a cost effective alternative.

The bottom line is you are not alone in your desire to see better to the rear. Some of the newer model cars have augmented rear vision to help see better to the rear even though they don’t suffer from the same problem you have. Since, these car models are being released, it’s only a matter of time before they release aftermarket camera systems designed to replace or enhance the rearview mirror. Unfortunately, I’m not aware of where to obtain an example of that system.

      2) What is the difference between the Yada you reviwed and the http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yada-Wireless-2-4Ghz-Back-Up-Camera-3-5-Nigth-Vision-Rearview-BT30681F-1-/271293855241?_trksid=p2054897.l4275
Yada Wireless 2.4Ghz Back Up Camera 3.5” Nigth Vision Rearview. BT30681F-1

**I apologize, but I am not able to compare the EBay model to the Yada I reviewed. You will need to compare features and model number to determine what their differences are.

I will also send this to you via email as you requested.

  2. steve kiener

I would like to mount a wireless camera on a motorcycle with the monitor mounted on a motorcycle helmet. Does such exist?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    • Mark Ridgeway

Steve, thanks for your question! The GoPro series has a monitor that can be mounted to some of its camera models. Check those out here: http://gopro.com/productsseparate These cameras lend themselves to being used in more hostile environments and for rougher use and may be a better choice than a wireless camera. It may also be a problem to have the monitor-receiver so close to the wireless camera. I think they might interfere with each other. Also, all the ones I work with need to be hardwired into 12V DC which means the camera and the monitor would have to be wired to your bike. The GoPro does not have to be wired-in to your motorcycle’s electrical system. I don’t know of any popular cameras or monitors that mount handily to a helmet other than the GoPro. You might be able to find a forward-facing car camera that you could mount to your helmet, but those also require 12V DC. I’m sorry, this probably isn’t that helpful. Let me know if you find anything that fits your requirements. I would like to know about it! -Mark

  3. Gary Crooks

    Hi Mark,
I want to install a wireless backup camera on a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. Is there any on line resource specific to my vehicle that would show the wiring and best way to approach the wiring? Please reply to my email address which is listed above.
    Thanks!
    Gary

    • Mark Ridgeway

Hi Gary, the good news is that if you get a wireless backup camera, the only wires you have to worry about are the power to the camera and the power to the display. Most folks plug the display into a power port. The power to the camera is a little more daunting because most folks want it to turn on when they backup. For more help on the installation, here is a list of YouTube videos that should help. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+install+a+wireless+backup+camera If you know which camera you’re planning to buy, you can check the manufacturers website for an installation manual or contact them directly. -Mark

  4. paul johnston

Thank you for the reviews. Other than the Yada, are there any that are truly waterproof? So far in my research the easiest waterproof model seems to be the IBall backup camera. Thoughts??

    • Mark Ridgeway

Very few cameras are truly waterproof which means they can be submerged. For the most part, they don’t need to be. Some manufacturers report their International Protection Rating (IP Code) and as long as that rating is IP65 or above you should be able to spray it with a garden hose and moisture won’t get in. If you’re looking to put the camera near a hitch that will go into the water when you launch a boat, that’s a different story. There you would definitely want IP67 or IP68. If a model doesn’t have an IP rating and claims to be waterproof, you should contact the manufacturer or go to their website to get the straight skinny. Most of the cameras we review claim to be weatherproof, but without talking to the manufacturer it’s hard to know what that means exactly. From my experience, even the cheapest cameras will have protection from water at least to some degree. If you’re concerned about moisture fogging up the camera, unfortunately most of the time that is caused by moisture in the air inside the camera housing and presents itself during changes in temperature. I see complaints about that, but that doesn’t mean the camera isn’t protected from water. Hope that helps! -Mark

  5. Adam

what do you think about the systems here? http://www.rearviewsafety.com/

    • Mark Ridgeway

Hi Adam. You really can’t go wrong with Rear View Safety. They consistently have some of the highest rated models available. The only thing is that their cameras and displays are mostly made for commercial applications and you may find that they are bulkier and more difficult to blend in with passenger vehicles. That’s the only drawback I can think of. -Mark

  6. Steve

Hi, is there a small, but good, camera which can be mounted inside the car at the rear wi dow? This way it may be easier wiring and keep the camera clean and possibly provide a netter viewing amgle. Th x
